International
Fellow of the Royal Society
According to the Society's statutes, candidates for election to the Fellowship must have made "a substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering science and medical science".
Unusually for a national academy, the Royal Society does not restrict its Fellowship to British nationals. The pool includes candidates who hold any Commonwealth nationality or Irish nationality as well as non-Commonwealth nationals resident in Commonwealth countries. Individuals who are eminent for their scientific discoveries and attainments, but who are ineligible for election to the Fellowship, may be eligible as candidates for the Foreign Membership.
Avicenna Prize for Ethics in Science
Established by the Executive Board of UNESCO at its 166th session on the initiative of the Islamic Republic of Iran, this Prize, awarded every two years, is intended to reward the activities of individuals and groups in the field of ethics in science. By thus promoting ethical reflection on issues raised by advances in science and technology, it is expected to help significantly to increase international awareness and highlight the importance of ethics in science.
SIBI Prize
The Scientific Committee will grant the SIBI award on a biennial basis during the course of each World Conference of Bioethics. It will be bestowed on the person, group or entity that, according to the judgement of the Committee's members, has brought forward the most relevant work, publication or teaching in the field of Bioethics, or contributed the most to build the language of Bioethics.
Awarded annually for outstanding scholarly work in the academic fields of the arts and humanities, social science, law and theology.
The objective of the award is to stimulate debate about ethics and society. The prize was first awarded in 1999 and is sponsored by the Internationale Spinozaprijs Foundation. Those who are considered are scientists, philosophers and writers who have gained their reputation in the research of the ethical principles of world society.The prize consists of a sculpture and the sum of 25 thousand euro.
The Manuel Velasco-Suárez Award in Bioethics was created in 2002 to stimulate young scholars in the development of their capacities for bioethical analysis. It is one of five awards presented by the Pan American Health and Education Foundation through its Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program, a partnership between the Foundation and PAHO.
Canada
The Order of Canada is the centrepiece of Canada’s honours system and recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. The Order recognizes people in all sectors of Canadian society. Their contributions are varied, yet they have all enriched the lives of others and made a difference to this country. Any person or group is welcome to nominate a deserving individual as candidate for appointment to the Order of Canada.

Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
Election to Fellowship in the Society is the highest academic accolade in Canada that is available to scientists and scholars. After their induction in the Society, Fellows are allowed to use the postnomial FRSC for Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in English, or MSRC in French for Membre de la Société royale du Canada, according to the language of the Fellow.

Abbyann D. Lynch Medal in Bioethics
The medal is awarded for a major contribution in bioethics by a Canadian. The contribution may be a book, a report, a scholarly article, a monograph or series of articles, which will normally be published in the two years preceding the nomination. The bronze medal and a cash amount of $2,000 are offered every year if there is a suitable candidate.

The Centenary Medal
The Centenary Medal was created in 1982 to honour individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the object of RSC and to recognize links to international organizations. Those who received it during the centenary celebrations of the Society are listed in the Proceedings for 1982. Since then the medal has been awarded by decisions in Council, at irregular intervals, in recognition of exceptional achievements in scholarship and research.
Pierre Chaveau Medal
For a distinguished contribution to knowledge in the humanities other than Canadian literature and Canadian history. The silver medal is offered every two years if there is a suitable candidate.
The McNeil Medal
The medal is awarded to a candidate who has demonstrated outstanding ability to promote and communicate science to students and the public within Canada (the term public is defined in its broadest sense). The bronze medal and a cash amount of $1,500 are awarded every year if there is a suitable candidate.
Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences
Election to Fellowship in the Academy is considered one of the highest honours for individuals in the Canadian health sciences community and carries with it a covenant to serve the Academy and the future well being of the health sciences irrespective of the Fellow's specific discipline. Fellows will have demonstrated leadership, creativity, distinctive competencies and a commitment to advance academic health science.

Distinguished Academic Award
The CAUT Distinguished Academic Award recognizes academics who excel in each of the domains of academic life: teaching, research, service to the institution and to the community. The recipients will be individuals whose teaching, research and service have contributed noticeably to the lives of their students, to their institution, to their field of study, and to the community.
Sarah Shorten Award
The Sarah Shorten Award was established in 1990 in honour of Sarah Shorten, who served as Vice-President (1982-83) and two terms as President of CAUT (1983-84 & 1984-85), to recognize outstanding achievements in the promotion of the advancement of women in Canadian universities and colleges.

Killam Prize
The Killam Prizes are awarded annually to distinguished Canadian scholars doing research in any of the following fields: engineering, health sciences, natural sciences, social sciences or humanities. Normally, one prize is awarded each year in each of the five fields.The prizes are not related to a particular achievement, but rather are given in recognition of a distinguished career and exceptional contributions in one of the above fields. The prizes are awarded with the expectation that the prize recipients will continue to contribute to the Canadian research community.

Molson Prize
Awarded annually to distinguished individuals (one in the arts and one in the social sciences and humanities). The prizes are intended to encourage continuing contributions to the cultural and intellectual heritage of Canada. To be nominated, candidates must have made a substantial and distinguished contribution over a significant period. In the words of the deed of the gift, the prizes are intended “to encourage Canadians of outstanding achievement in the fields of the Arts, the Humanities or the Social Sciences to make further contribution to the cultural or intellectual heritage of Canada....”
United States of America
Lifetime Achievement Award: Recognizes outstanding contributions and significant publications that have helped shape the direction of the fields of bioethics and the medical humanities. The recipient agrees to make a major presentation at the ASBH Annual Meeting.
Nova Scotia
The Order of Nova Scotia is the highest honour of the Province of Nova Scotia. Established in 2001, it encourages excellence by recognizing Nova Scotians for outstanding contributions or achievements. Members of the Order of Nova Scotia have distinguished themselves in many fields of endeavour and have brought honour and prestige to themselves and to Nova Scotia.
Dalhousie University
Max Forman Research Award: recognizes the accomplishments of an investigator who has demonstrated excellence throughout a distinguished career in medical research.
The DMRF also awards three awards of excellence annually: one in basic medical research, one in clinical research, and one in any of the six following research areas: health law, bioethics, medical informatics, population health, medical education, or medical humanities.
